iCal has an option in the Calendar menu that says "Find shared calendars"...
Currently, the only way to publish calendars is via WebDAV. It would be wonderful if this new feature is the beginnings of some Exchange calendaring replacement, but most likely I'm betting that other iCal users will be able to share their calendars via Rendezvous.
It would be *great* if other users can edit shared calendars, and if this wasn't limited to people within the LAN/Rendezvous. While this may not function with MS Exchange servers, we may at least have a Mac alternative.
Also, as many of you already know, Address Book has an option that says "Sync with Exchange server". Also, in iSync there is a new option for "Exchange". I'm betting that you will be able to sync personal contacts and stuff you have created on the Exchange server with the OS X Address Book. This wasn't working with my Exchange server, but one would think that this feature is in the works.
Currently, the OS X Address Book cannot access Exchange GAL's because Exchange 2000 requires ADS, and within many environments GAL queries require ADS authentication. It looks like within the OS X Address Book in Panther that we will be able to authenticate to ADS, as there are fields present (although ghosted) for doing so. Again, hopefully this feature is in the works. It would provide a means other than Entourage 10.1.4 for accessing an Exchange GAL.
In summary, we *might* have a complete (or semi-complete) Outlook alternative in Panther.

I'm sorry this doesn't entertain you.

I'll take any Exchange compatibility we can get....in any shape or form!

There was allegedly confirmed support for some type of MS access protocol in iCal, but I can't remember whether it was Access or Exchange. Search some Panther threads about the subject.

this might be a little off the topic, but another observation is the browsing of windows workgroups. i loved how i could simply browse the workgroups in column mode in jag. doesn't seem anywhere in sight, even under the "networks" section. guess i'll just have to fill it in manually with an IP addy.
doesn't have to do with exchange, but at least im still in the networking category.

Or the "large business" could get off it's butt and run something other then Exchange.
I am getting REALLY tired of people complaining about MS and viruses and about Exchange compatibility. For god sakes look at OpenGroupware or Notes or Groupwise. If you don't like MS then drop use their stuff.
I've been working in IT for almost 10 years and I haven't used a MS desktop or server for almost 5, and I'm very proud of the fact that I've never installed or used WinXP. As a matter of fact the only reason I use MSOffice is because the OpenOffice group keeps dragging their feet on getting a native OSX version out. But to be fair the X11 version is still good.

Hey.. I agree, but unfortunately I'm not the one making those kinds of decisions at my College.

Sorry if it doesn't fit your world-view, but Exchange isn't going away and not everyone complains about it. Many companies are quite happy using MS technology and your solution - change their minds then their infrastructure - is not workable.
And I for one don't want to be the sad-case who continually pesters the IT department about the virtues of Notes R6 or whatever!
Entourage may never be as good as Outlook for OS 9 (why didn't they carbonise that?) so Exchange support in Mail, Address Book and iCal would be awesome for many of us.

I have heard a lot of rumbling lately of MS trying to de-emphasize using MAPI all together. Basically, the performance over slow links is severely hampered by using a RPC based protocol instead of a simpler, less latency sensitive protocol like IMAP or even WebDAV. Also, supposedly MAPI is largely undocumented (which is why no one has ever been able to make a client that works with it.) So, eventually, administrators of Exchange sites will be essentially forced to use protocols that other software besides Outlook can use.
Of course, it will take a long time before this filters down, since there are still a lot of sites out there running Exchange 5.5 and 5.0..
