Is there a way to select what picture you want to download from your camera? I think it's pretty lame that you have download all your pictures.

iPhoto doesn't provide this option, however the "Image Capture" application provided in the Applications folder gives this capability I believe.

Yep. Or you can just mount and open the memory card and drag individual photos into iPhoto.
