I have a headless Mac (file server)

Is there a way to run fsck, rather than hookup a monitor, reboot in safe mode, run it, reboot, remove monitor...

Lots of steps. Is there a way to do so headless?
I always use protection when fscking my Mac... Do you?

Sure. You don't really need to see what you're doing to start the machine up with Command-S down, wait for a while, type 'fsck' followed by return, wait until you hear the disk activity stop, then type 'reboot'. Of course, this way you won't see if there were any errors or not...

Another thing you could do would be to connect the machine to another Mac using a FireWire cable and put it into Target Disk Mode. You could then run Disk Utility on the drive from the other Mac.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Check the drive with fsck -y , and once it is all cleaned up, turn on journaling (10.2.5 or later, I believe) with:

sudo disktuil enableJournal /
