For some reason, my machine doesn't respond to cmd-w to close the windows in the finder and I swear it used to.

Am I going insane or I did I break something?

opt+cmd+w closes all finder windows not just the front most. try that

you aren't on a powerbook with num lock on are you, it disables shortcuts.
