So I have a bunch of custom icons for different things. I used to use candybar, but the trial ran out, and I'm not that interested in buying the full version..but that's another story.

Anyway, I'm trying to change icons for some basic stuff-desktop HDs, folders, etc. I use ctrl-I to get info on the icon itself, then copy that icon and try pasting into the info pane of the target folder, app, etc. Problem is, sometimes I have a custom icon that needs deleting first, and when I hit delete and try to paste the new icon, I get the old one instead. It looks like X copies a custom icon to the clipboard when you delete it...

I tried deleting the custom icon first, then copying the new one and pasting it, but the old icon keeps popping up,. Checked the clipboard, the new one is there, but it's not pasting. (no sign of the old one) Only way around it is to delete the old icon, restart the whole system, then paste the new one.

Any ideas?

Sometimes force-quitting the Finder will get the proper icon to appear. However, there seems to be a bug in OS X with changing hard drive icons. Doesn't always work until you restart. But give the Finder quit thing a try.

You can copy, paste, and delete icons via a contextual menu. Get it here:

You also can't change the "Utilities" folder under 10.2; however, that has finally been changed in Panther...
