I'm thinking about upgrading my iMac's RAM to its capacity limit of 1 Gbyte. I understand that in order to do this, I will need to uninstall the factory RAM and put in two new cards. I have no idea about the quality of the cards...
It's hard to tell. They all seem the alike, at least to my eye. So price becomes the differentiating factor. Have any of you done a similar upgrade? What feedback can you offer before I make the order?

Thanks!

In case you don't know, it is a bit of work to replace the factory installed memory. It requires tools, thermal paste, and skill. I believe Apple doesn't support users replacing the built-in memory, i.e. it voids your warranty.

Actually, I did not know that. Thanks very much. Since my warranty expired, I believe that's not going to be a snag.

Any risk of some odd behavior? The machine was designed to handle 1Gig of RAM but one never knows... and I don't know of anyone who actually has their iMacs at that limit. Thus, my paranoia.

There's no problem maxing out the RAM. You can go beyond the max generally when higher capacity DIMMs become available. The stated maximum is what the maximum amount of RAM that was installable when the machine was announced. So, if there are now 1GB DIMMs available now for the imac, then you can go to 2GB of RAM.

Also, you'll want to search for instructions on how to change the factory installed RAM for an iMac. I've seen them before. A google search should find them. It is quite an involved process. You basically will have to completely take apart the iMac.

Shouldn't this be in the iMac forum?
