Yesterday I booted from 9.2.2 into X.2.2 and got:

/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
/etc/master.passwd: No such file or directory
sh-2.05a#

standing in the upper left corner. Just seconds after startup(in the grey Apple Logo screen).
I booted from the X-CD, repaired the bindings, resetted root/personal password... tried booting with shift... same crap. :-(

X - Wizards, what do you know?
Regards,
PB.

Oh dear, that looks scary.

Have you got an Open Firmware password set or summut?

Can you still boot into OS9? If you can I'd get your stuff backed up pdq. Maybe have a look for that file while you're there too.

I just thought of something; have you tried running the OSX installer? I hear that can repair a few things sometimes without doing a full-on reinstall. Worth a try.

That looks... Bizarre. Sounds like either you went happily cleaning up those ugly directories in OS 9 or you have hard drive corruption.

If that is all you're missing, just go into OS9 and recreate the file. Its contents on my iBook looks like this:

Code:
## # User Database # # Note that this file is consulted when the system is running in single-user # mode. At other times this information is handled by lookupd. By default, # lookupd gets information from NetInfo, so this file will not be consulted # unless you have changed lookupd's configuration. ## nobody:*:-2:-2::0:0:Unprivileged User:/dev/null:/dev/null root:*:0:0::0:0:System Administrator:/var/root:/bin/tcsh daemon:*:1:1::0:0:System Services:/var/root:/dev/null unknown:*:99:99::0:0:Unknown User:/dev/null:/dev/null smmsp:*:25:25::0:0:Sendmail User:/private/etc/mail:/dev/null www:*:70:70::0:0:World Wide Web Server:/Library/WebServer:/dev/null mysql:*:74:74::0:0:MySQL Server:/dev/null:/dev/null sshd:*:75:75::0:0:sshd Privilege separation:/var/empty:/dev/null
Don't forget to use UNIX line feeds (BBEdit can do this for you).
