Hi,

What windows apps is the new iChat compatible with, for proper A/V conferencing?

Can anyone using AIM get full A/V?

I'm hoping it's not Mac -> Mac only.

Thanks

Simon

None, no, it is.
Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Has anyone heard anything about other people "copying" ichat AV stuff. It seems like Jobs said something about that happening eventually. I'd love to hear that AOL included ichat av to AIM for windows support. No matter how hard I try I cant seem to convince everyone I know to switch to mac... Though blaster helped out a lot.

Oh yeah... I was just in the apple store in Atlanta... G5.. omg its sooo sweeet.

AOL has just been allowed by the FCC to include video chat in AIM - perhaps they will use the same format as Apple.

what's interesting about this is that the new version of AOL will by default include an installation of quicktime.

there was some speculation that this would enable AOL to include a version of the iTunes music store.

perhaps the same will happen for iChat AV support over standard AOL and/or AIM.

For now not even AIM's audio-chat is compatible. It isn't inplemented in the OS X version of AIM either.

Yahoo Messenger works with the iSight on the Mac. Don't know if the same is true for Windows.

Apple has good reasons to keep it limited to Mac at this time.

It is in beta - apparently the Panther betas are more interesting and people have been reporting versions with much better sound for people with high bandwidth connections.

More important is that it focuses people on Macs. It turns out that most Mac users aren't totally isolated - they tend to exist in small groups of friends and family (in my case most of my family around the world are Mac users and this isn't terribly unusual). This gives a member of that group who doesn't have a Mac a reason to think about one when they trade in the Dell and a person with a very old Mac to think about another Mac rather than a Dell.

They have been very good building it on open standards so they can move to commonality when the rest of the world builds something good. Until then it is another perk for using Macs.

In my case it has already paid for itself in killing my international long distance calls from the US to Denmark, the UK and Japan)
