I solved my previous problem by doing an Archive and Install, but now that it's running again, none of the Network devices (ethernet or AirPort, mainly) have a DHCP option, which is how i connect to my router. Because of this, i can't run Software Update and restore the system to its previous state. Is there anything i can do to get this option back?

You did the archive and install, then nothing else? You should have a completely clean system, hmmm.
Have you tried creating a new user, make it an admin account, then login as that user?
Also, if you hold the shift key down after entering your password in the login screen, you will by-pass any non-standard apps, haxies, etc.
Have you removed all login items from the Login System Preference Pane? Are there any items in /Library/StartupItems, /Library/PreferencePanes, ~/Library/Contextual Menu Items, ~/Library/PreferencePanes, ~/Library/InputManagers? Are there any non-standard Panes in System Preferences?
When you did the archive and install, did you preserve your users info? If so there is something that was included in the new install that is creating the problem, I bet. This method imports existing Users stuff back into the fresh Home folders.

yeah, i just set it to archive and install and preserve users/data and started it, and when it rebooted it showed me a login screen with my user there, and all of my stuff was still in my home folder. everything seems to work fine except for not having the DHCP option in the Network prefs. I'll look through the folders you mentioned and see if there's anything in there that might be causing a problem.
Thanks,
Max

ok, i checked and none of the folders you mentioned even exist, much less have something in them. I tried making a new user, but when i logged in with it i still had the same problem, no DHCP option in Network Prefs. Any other suggestions?
edit: now that i at least have access to my files, i think i'll just make backups and reformat. it was starting to get a bit bogged down anyway...

Another person here had a similar problem. Delete /var/db/SystemConfiguration/preferences.xml and reboot.

that worked... temporarily. deleted, restarted, opened network prefs, set it to DHCP (it was there!) and AirPort turned on, but still no internet access. i went to sharing (which reverts my computer's name to "One's Computer" after every reboot) and it says Personal Web Sharing, FTP Access, and Printer Sharing aren't installed (not my doing) so this install definitely seems to have some problems. I'm still leaning forward to just reformatting and reinstalling from scratch...
thanks, though.
