I've been trying to empty my trash while in jaguar but my ti powerbook 667 crashes every time. how it happens:

1. i go to empty the trash
2. a gray descends upon my screen and the mouse freezes
3. a meaasge appears saying that i must hold down the power button and restart my computer

what i've tried:

1. restarting
2. ran disk warrior

anyone know what to do in this instance? how about what causes this problem? is it a corrupt file?

thanks to anyone and everyone for ideas, help, words of encouragement.

I had the same problem awhile ago with a corrupt file in my trash. All I did to fix the problem was boot into OS9, delete the file from that and the crashing was all gone.

Ditto.

I had a bad iMovie clip in the trash and I would get a kernel panic every time I'd empty the trash. Since I have a 17" iMac, I couldn't boot into OS 9 to solve the problem. I booted from an external firewire drive in OS X. Problem solved. It seems these corrupt files will crash your computer if the file you're trying to delete resides on the startup drive. Booting from another drive, you don't get the crash.

That's a Kernel Panic, you could post the logs here (if there are any they can be found in Apple System Profiler) so someone here could figure out the problem. Most of the time it's a hardware problem. Did you add any new hardware recently ? or update drivers for hardware ?
Or you could just try what the previous poster said

Do you have Norton Utilities installed on your machine? The FileSaver feature can cause kernel panics when you try to empty the trash.

OK. But if you have Norton Futilities installed, it will have dumped some kext's into you your System/Library/Extensions folder, irrespective of whether you've got FileSaver (?!) running or not.

These cause the problem..

Do yourself a favour and remove all traces of Norton Fu's.

Run the built-in Fie check utilities from your start-up disk, and get Disk Warrior if you're really worried about the state of your files... but kick Dr Norton to the kerb

You know something is seriously wrong with a software product that claims to protect and fix your computer... when instead it's the cause of a good fifty percent of them on these forums.

Stay away from Norton, folks. Bad.

Hello art_director,

If you have a free moment, could you post the contents of your /Library/Logs/panic.log file? I am curious to see if there is anything in the backtrace that could help pinpoint the cause of your Kernel Panics. If FileSaver had anything to do with it, we'd love to know more so we can look into the cause.

Thanks,
-Nick
