I moved the Utilities Folder out of the Applications Folder and now I can't move it back.

When I try, the Finder tries to *copy* the folder (instead of just moving it) and gives an error that some of the files have 'special permisions' and can't be copied.

Why is it trying to copy the folder instead of just moving it? (It's on the same disk/volume)

And how can I put the folder back? (Can I just move it back from OS 9?)

Try this:

In Terminal, go to the directory where your Utilities folder currently resides, by typing 'cd /location of folder'

Then type 'ditto /Utilities /Applications'

(type both without the quote marks)

I'm no UNIX expert, but that should work. If it doesn't, a *nix head from around here will be sure to set me straight pretty quickly.

1.) Repair permissions
2.) Try in OS 9 (as you suggested)

*Can you move it elsewhere on your HD besides the /Applications directory?

If you use the Terminal technique, the command should be ditto -rsrcFork

/Applications/Utilities contains NetInfo Manager and Disk Utility, which are setuid root. That is probably why the Finder won't let you move them...

Okay. I just booted into OS9 and moved it back to the Apps folder.

OS X really scares me...

Permissions are one of the tradeoffs we've had to make with the change to a UNIX system. They're a tad daunting, and definitely don't allow as much customization of your folder structure, but as you get used to things, you will (I hope ) find the trade-off more than worth it.

It's definitely reccommended by most folks around here that you leave the Applictions folder and all the Apple iApps and utilities where they are. The biggest reason being that all the point-release updates are going to expect them to be in a particular place, and the updates will fail if they've been moved. There's been a good amount of "discussion" concerning that around here, but for now, it's a fact of life.

Gotta take the good with the bad, and most folks agree, the former quite heavily outweighs the latter.
