See here.
Well, it doesn't say Panther per se, but it does say OS X for sure, and the description does sound like Panther:
" In addition to the G5 machines, the university said it is using a beta version of the latest release of OS X, new networking hardware from Mellanox and Cisco, and cutting-edge configuration and cooling technologies to build the powerful cluster for a fraction of the price of a traditional supercomputer."

Well this is also a good indication that a GM is close at hand.

Wow. The building they will be housed in will be saturated with that good, wholesome, plasticy Just-Outta-the-Box-Mac-Smell™ for 6 months.
mmm... new mac smell.

And it must be a huge room, considering these aren't even Xserves. But why "plasticky smell"? They're mostly aluminum.
Anyways, I wonder these machines are. I'm guessing they're stripped down with no video, optical drive, modem, keyboard, and mouse. And they probably have a small hard drive like 40 GB or something. With a further discount, I betcha they'd be less than $2000 apiece, which is pretty damn good for one dual G5 2.0 cluster node. A standard config dual G4 1.33 cluster node costs $2800.

I would assume they still have that "smell". When I got my TiBook, I noticed that smell even though there was little plastic on the unit. Perhaps it's the packaging materials? Either way, it sure would be fun cracking open all those boxes.
Hopefully when everything is set up there, someone working there will take a pic and post it online.
