I know somebody who is trying to play DVD's with different nationality codes on them. The problem is, it says they can only change between zones 1 and 2 ~five times.

What happens when they exceed that limit?

Is there a way around this cap?

you can go to this page and download firmware for your DVD drive. once you flash your drive, it becomes region-free and can play discs from any region. this is the best way, since you can still use the apple DVD player to watch movies, but firmware for your drive may not be available.

you can also use VLC to watch DVDs from other regions. sometimes the quality is a little choppy, but you don't have to flash your drive.

It can be annoying but if you want to spend about 30 minutes before each DVD, you can use DVD Backup and rip it without the region code (maybe you can just change the region code but not decrypt it and it would go much faster?...) and then use DVD Player to play the VIDEO_TS folder. Tell us what you do

Personally I like Apple's DVD player a lot more than VLC for DVDs. I've hacked the drive firmware on every Mac I've owned (that had a DVD drive) with no problems.

I've hacked the DVD drive firmware and then use RegionX to reset the region and change count whenever I want to. Works like a charm.
