You may have read my other thread about iBook HD space. I've started to think that an external FW drive will be more useful than an internal upgrade (as I can keep it when I upgrade etc), but an iPod would be great too. Is this a viable alternative to a dedicated FW HD? Are there any cons, or does it work in the same way?

It's pretty slow and under heavy usage can get a bit too hot. I wouldn't use it for a boot drive or render video off of it but for storing of documents and such it will work pretty well.

It works the exact same way as any other drive though once it mounts on your desktop. The only difference is that by default the OS will fire up iTunes when you plug it in.

The iPod is not designed for heavy use--it lacks heat dissipation, and the drive itself is not designed for anything hefty. Apple itself says that they will not service any iPod that they believe was used as a boot drive.

I suggest you invest in a regular external drive. Save a few bucks and get yourself a casing and then add a drive of your choosing.

What RPM are iPod drives? 3200? 4800? just curious.
