I used to have cable and remember downloading 12 files at once all going quite fast and still being able to surf the net reasonably well. Now it's a couple years later and I have ADSL now and whenever I start download more than 2 files my connection slows to a crawl for everything else, I can barley surf the net as it is so sloooow. As soon as the files are done it's back up to speed, why does it take such a hit?

Is cable really that much better than ADSL in this respect?

Also I lose connection several times a day and have to reset my modem (unplug and plug back in) to get it back, anyone else get this?

Can't give you an explanation but you might try dslreports.com. They might be able to help you out.

If they are BitTorrent downloads, then you need to limit your upstream, it can choke your downstream on ADSL. Also, cable connections are always throttled. When you hit a max speed on cable, it's often just a bandwidth block, not an actual limitation. This means that you still have a bit of room to squeeze out ACK packets to keep regular low-bandwidth tasks responsive. On ADSL, when you've maxed out your connection, you generally hit a physical or technical limit. The ACK packets can't get out quickly and perceived surfing speed slows to a crawl. I recommend CarraFix to throttle back your connection just enough to allow responsive surfing while downloading or uploading.

It's any type. When using BitTorrent having a setting up 1 for the limit shouldn't have an effect on the speed for downloading right?

I will try the carrafix program.

For BitTorrent on ADSL connections, allow 4 downloads and limit 5KBs upstream using BT its self (you could use CarraFix for this but why) and then when the file is finished, turn off all upload limiting and seed it for a while.
