I've seen two oblique references to it, one in the last Macworld and one online, but little else. Is it true that this Panther feature will turn any printer into a PostScript printer?

I think the deal is that Panther will translate any postscript file into a PDF on the fly.
So if you drop a Postscript document on your printer it will print as a normal postscript printer.

Yes that's what I interpret it to be.

I believe it is just Gimp-Print being built in.

Not Gimp-Print, but Ghostscript. Gimp-Print is a set of printer drivers. Ghostscript is a postscript interpreter.

Cool, that means that we'll able to print PostScript to any cheap laser. Of course, with Quark 4.1 and 5.1 still running while booted in OS 9, that could be a moot point.

You can already print to [almost any] cheap printer - I inherited an HP LaserWriter III with a parallel port, no PostScript support. Hooked it up to the parallel port of my SMC Barricade wireless router, installed GIMP-print and now I can print to it. Panther will make this a little easier to install, but the pieces are already there.
