the number pad on my keyboard has stopped working. That is, if I press any of the 0-9 or decimal keys, nothing happens. The /*-+ and Enter key still work. Pressing the NumLock key makes a beep in some apps, but not others, and turns its light on/off, but has no other effect (I don't know that it should, I never used it before)

KeyCaps shows that the OS is aware the keys are being pressed, so this appears to be some sort of software problem.

Has anyone had the same problem? Know what I need to do? I assume either some app is acting up or some preferences are corrupt, bit figured I'd ask before I start replacing things.

Already tried: rebooting, unplugging/reconnecting keyboard, different keyboard (normal kbd: Logitech wireless; also tried Apple Pro keyboard)

The only thing I can recall installing/changing was an updated version of OSXvnc, but disabling that had no effect on the problem.

Have you accidentally switched on the Universal Access Mouse feature? Look under System Preferences>Universal Access>Mouse

Pressing option five times in a row will cause the keypad to become a controller for the pointer.
