So Apple are trademarking "lynx", "cougar", "tiger", etc.. http://www.microsoft-watch.com/artic...1205653,00.asp - why not "Lion"?

Sure, lions tend to lie around for days in a stupor of digestive processes between every meal (you try eating a whole zebra and see how well you fare ) - and maybe this doesn't fit the image of a modern, responsive opreating system, but still... it is THE big cat. So why?

I think Apple should start coding the OS releases after small lap dogs.

Of course they can. It is extremely unlikely that the lynx browser has a trademark on the name - so if Apple is granted the trademark it will be theirs.

I personally think they shouldn't use it, though, of the three only Cougar really sounds good. Maybe Tiger.

Perhaps Apple should acknowledge its' foundation - Mac OS X Nemo.

I think it's unlikely, but perhaps Apple is trademarking some of the names preemptively - to prevent others from "getting on the feline bandwagon" so to speak.

I think its cool having the OSs named after felines... But then again it is getting kinda boring, what next? Furry kitten? Apple should get totally away from animals... maybe go with chemicals or something... OS11 Uranium... OS11.1 Hydrochorliformic Acid (however its spelt) OS11.2 Nicotine

Who knows... Apple will have some awesome names, we all know that.

I like Apples animals for OS names, i think it's fun. There are still plenty of cats they can use.

Mac OS X "Siamese" the OS that destructively tears your curtains while you're out.

Mac OS X "Persian" the OS that you have to groom constantly and will leave hairballs on the carpet...

Microsoft has had a change of names as well, instead of naming OS's after cattle, they will now go with the trendy viruses they can't get, but wish they could...

Windows Chlamydia™ , you wont know you have it till it's too late.

Windows Ghonnereah™ , The warm feeling you get when you have it only happens when you're going to the bathroom.

I think they should start using the names of different races, or nationalities. IE, Mac OS X "Albino" or Mac OS X "Arab"

But then people in the Bicker Lounge would start arguing about which OS version is the best, Caucasian, Filipino, or Asian. And we would have to figure out why African American seems to hang around the cities...

You may have a point there - at least if the name is meant to allude to the performance level of the operating system: If I remember correctly it is usually lions of the female gender who do the actual hunting and killing - the male is more of a "couch-potato with an attitude" and lies around waiting for dinner to be served.

Very simple explanation as to why Apple would never codename a system Lion.
If they didn't deliver with OS X "Lion", then everyone would dub the new system "Lyin'".

I can hear the promos from the review magazines now: "Mac OS X Lion: It be lyin' like a mother$%*&@#!"

that would be horrible...

Mac OS X Canadian, as it boots up would say "startin up, eh."

Mac OS X Hispanic, you're G4 would attempt to mug you then run like mad into the ajoining parkland.

Mac OS X Chinese every OS would be the family pack and the new wait logo would be the Aldus fetch cowdog landing on a buffet table...

Mac OS X Arab would have problems with crashing when working in tall buildings.

Mac OS X French, You're Mac will begin to spit on you and eventually smell funny. (only the former applies to French Canadians.)

Mac OS X British All the error messages will be verbose, but gramatically correct and somewhat pretentious.

No i dont think that would be a good move... the stereotypes alone would cause issues.

Apple should go with anything but Bovines, perhaps codenames should be common names... of course you know the first one would be Mac OS X Steve.

actually the French one would refuse to startup and if it ever did, would immediately surrender (kernal panic?).

Well... of all those, I also think only Cougar sounds good for the name, but they do really need to stop with the animal names... it's really getting old.

Besides, it's going to be 10.3 soon! why go on? get on with OS 11 already! grrrrrrrrrrrrrr
