iSync works good with my T68i except that a Japanese contact shows up as four squares. Can't the T68i display Japanese names? Hard to believe for a Japanese phone.
I put the roman character version of the name in the Phonetic First/last field, but that doesn't help.
The .Mac address book shows the name as four question-marks. Again hard to believe that's normal since .Mac is supposedly localized to Japanese.
How do I get iSync to work correctly with Japanese names?

Nasrudin sat on a river bank when someone shouted to him from the opposite side: "Hey! how do I get across?" "You are across!" Nasrudin shouted back.

Nope, the T68i doesn't support Japanese AFAIK.

Really? It's a Japanese phone. It's also not working with .Mac address book, so I think it's probably an iSync problem.

Strictly speaking it is a nordic phone (the Ericsson half of the equation is where the phone expertise comes from, not the Sony half). No idea how to help with your problem, but the only languages I have listed on my T68i are English, French and German so I guess that Japanese characters are not supported by default.

My Nokia 3650 be all nordic too. As a result I get the same boxes instead of Japanese support.
