help!!

i've been using my powerbook with 10.2.6 for..ever, no problems.
today, i tried to create a "guest" account; the preference pane (accounts) froze, so i force-quit system prefs.

decided to restart (it's been a while).
now, i get the startup screen, the "loading items" window, then...a grey screen.

no login panel.

my osx disks are not here, so i can't boot from that.
i CAN boot from a firewire disk in os9...anything i can do from there??

thanks in advance!

Depending on how far the boot gets, there may be some messages that show briefly indicating what is happening during startup. If you are getting this far, note the last message you see.

There is a script that runs at startup, going step by step through a specific sequence. If you have the info above, then we can pinpoint more accurately where the failaure is happening.

We can look at and modify the startup script from OS 9 (brain sugery and all the caveats).

thanx...but no messages,
everything runs fine until the login screen should appear.
i can even, at the grey screen, move the mouse, adjust contrast & volume...and bring up the restart/shutdown/sleep window.

only thing that changed today was trying to create a guest in accounts...
last i saw that pref pane, there was a blank space after my admin login name; when i clicked on the "space" the guestname ("visitor") showed up...then i had to force-quit sys prefs.

I would run the startup so you can see the actual startup process. I forget the actual keys you have to hold down (command-v?). This will let you know where the hangup is.

I had a similar problem, used Disk Warrior which found loads of errors but I eventually had to do an archive install.

I agree with the above post, just do an archive/install. It'll keep your users and all their settings and applications, clean up the system folder, and get everything running again. You'll need about 2GB of free space to safely perform it though.

startup, use command + v to see the startup and then view in text where it stops, chances are the answers will be blaringly simple to figure out, or highly obscure, typical unix.

Delete your loginwindow prefs from /system/library/Preferences and /Library/Preferences/ Personally i'd use Archive and Install as a last resort. and if it happens again u still won't know how to fix it except accepting defeat and reinstalling the OS.. it's worth troughtshooting.

If you're successfully able to boot from another drive, I'd rename the /Library directory (top level), and then try rebooting into OS X.

The system will create a new /Library directory and all your universal prefs, fonts, etc will be out of action, but you can recover them from the renamed Library if required, or otherwise recreate them.

I hope this helps!
