Is there a way to edit the spell checker. I accidentially told it to learn several misspelled words and would like to remove the misspelled words from the user dictionary.

thanks,

I can't see any way of doing it. I have sent feedback to Apple about this and other features lacking in the spell checker in the past.

I hope Panther has a more fully featured spell checker.

To remove words from the spelling app. Just go to;

<YOUR HOME DIRECTORY>/Library/Spelling/

You will find a text file like:

en or en_UK or en_US or it

Just open any of these files in TextEdit, and remove any bad words.

If that is to complex just delete those text files from your:

<YOUR HOME DIRECTORY>/Library/Spelling/

And you will reset speller to its default state.

Tried to open the file with TextEdit and it gave me a message " Could not complete operation" and an error code of -10814.

What does that mean?

I did trash the file and another was created but couldn't open that one either--same error message.

I am able to open and edit both files in that folder "English" and "en".

It could be the permissions of the parent folder. That error code is not listed in the MacOS error codes (/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/CarbonCore.framework/Headers/MacErrors.h)

It's interesting to see which words you've added to the "en" file over time.

"XPress php mp3 Whoot iMate NuBus Audion Konfabulator SHOUTcast Bicubic Shockwave Wintel Fugly dongle TiVo"

For some reason, it put "****" and "****ing" in the "English" file.

I checked both the Spelling folder and the 'en' file inside and both show me as the owner with both read and write acess.

Wished I could figure out why I can't access it. I've deleted the file and when a new one is created it gives the same error message.
