My father's been having some trouble with his iBook (10.2.6) not being able to open some apple apps (iCal, iPhoto, System Prefs, Address Book). Whenever he clicks on them in the dock, selects them from the applications menu or the apple menu (system prefs), they bounce once or twice in the dock and then stop. No window from the programs open and there are no little triangles under the apps in the dock.

Other apps (MS Office, iMovie [so not ALL apple apps]) seem to be working fine.

Unfortunately, he's in Chile, which means I can't exactly run over and look at the screen. We've tried repairing disk permissions and 'fsck -y'-ing, but nothing has worked so far.

Any suggestions??

From the sound of it, the affected apps are all Cocoa-based, whereas Office isn't and iMovie might not be (depending on the version). So I would guess there's possibly something wrong with the Cocoa frameworks on his system. Unless you know of any other apps that would contradict that. The only solution I can think of for a corrupted framework would be reinstalling.

Just to be sure, though, he is savvy enough to know what fsck did, right? Because if it didn't report a "File System OK", that could be relevant.

Sounds like he's missing a framework that those apps need. Have him open the Console app (/Applications/Utilities/Console) and try to launch one of the apps that's not working. Have him send you the text that appears in the Console, and post it here.

OK, thanks...I'll have him try to launch the programs with console open. Will post the results tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon.

Thanks for your help. I'm hoping I won't need him to reinstall...

If he needs to re-install, have him archive and install, then apply the updates to get back to 10.2.6, iCal will need re-installing too.

Hopefully we might be able to avoid reinstalling. It depends on what the error is...

OK...got some more info on the problem.

First, it seems that he has not taken the fsck -y to completion. He's gone through 20+ cycles, and the machine is not giving the all clear. I've never personally had to do that many cycles, is it normal? Should I have him continue? When should he give up?

As far as the console log is concerned, I had him follow your instructions. Here is the e-mail he sent me:

Eesh. That's not what I was hoping it would be... it looks like things are messed up quite nicely.

Since you keep running fsck, but it never completely fixes the problem, my guess is that the hard drive has fairly severe problems. I would recommend getting DiskWarrior and using that to repair the drive as it is way more powerful than fsck. Then see if things improve at all. If not, post the contents of one of those crash logs that it is writing in /Users/liz/Library/Logs/CrashReporter/ and we will see if that contains anything helpful.

Same thing started happening on my iMac. Some applications that previously worked won't start anymore:

Sep 8 19:45:57 iMac WindowServer[515]: ERROR! execle(/Applications/Utilities/_Others/Res24OSXDemo/Resorcerer 2.4.1) returned, err=22

What is this mysterious err=22 ??

Safari and Mail.app still work, but not many others, including Games and ATI video driver update (Oct 02), which someone said may fix things.

Deleting the windowserver plist files doesn't help, nor does Diskwarrior, fsck -y, Disk First Aid etc, not even safe boot mode.

Any ideas?

Error 22 appears to be:

#define EINVAL 22 /* Invalid argument */

I'm not sure what could cause this error. It does sound like things might be pretty messed up, though. I'm afraid that you may need to do a reinstall...
