I was sitting at the kitchen table doing some web design stuff on my 17 inch Power Book yesterday. I started with full battery and ran down to 9% in about an hour and 15 minutes. I wasn't doing anything HD or optical drive intensive. Pretty sad

What's pretty sad is people that can't understand the concept of "DEVELOPER PREVIEW."

So your assumption is that I'm not a developer?
Interesting...

no, it's that you're lame and don't understand that a DP is not the same as final/release. previews are usually filled with bugs and unfinished features.

I think what people are saying is, when it comes out and it's final, and it STILL does this. You will have a legitimate complaint.
But since it's not finished yet.....
It's probably all that debug code hogging up system resources and talking up all your power.

I'm not going to consider this a fair test until you sit down and try the exact same thing 10.2.6. Also, have you calibrated your battery recently? It could be that the Power Manager was underestimating how much power your battery had left. I think what myself and others are disappointed about is that you just automatically blamed Panther without considering other possibilities or offering any sort of explanation as to what Panther is doing wrong. The point of a developer preview is not to blindly bitch when something breaks, but offer constructive criticism. Also, why are you complaining to us? Have you submitted a bug report? If not, then I would suggest you do that before you complain in a public forum then next time you find a bug (not that I'm saying you can't do both).

If you are a developer, why didn't you understand the concept of a developer preview?
Developers know that a preview release may have TONS of major functionality inoperable. Developer Previews might crash frequently and might even destroy data.
If you understood all that, why did you make such a ridiculous post?

It's not just panther - 10.2 does is too with my new PB 17.
I think the battery life just sucks.

Topic Title: "Power Management Not Yet Up to Par in Panther"
how about some constructive responses? like confirmations on other hardware? what's wrong with this place?
i hope the situation has been reported to apple. those who understand a developer preview understand its purpose - to straighten out the bugs that are found. this can't happen if they're not reported, although sometimes they should be discussed first to eliminate any doubt around the issue. this is a place to do that.
no, i can't confirm - i don't have the panther preview.

Well, you self-riteous monkeys, I was not complaining, or reporting, or soliciting advice. I was just noting it, for the reading pleasure of those that haven't gotten their hands on panther yet. I know my machine and know that this is not normal behaviour when using any build of Jaguar that has released since it shipped.
I was just noting it. I wasn't asking for help. I wasn't decrying the faults of the OS. Yes its pre-release. Hasn't gotten to a satisfactory place when it comes to power management.
It's not like Apple makes special builds when it comes time to seed to developers. They usually build once every day or every other day, and if the build is stable enough they distro it to developers. If the developer is high up enough they can get daily builds weather or not they are official developer seeds. Panther is getting close to being done. It is now very stable and the remaining problems are fewer and fewer every day. I was merely pointing out that this is one major issue that still needs to be addressed. I thought it was interesting.

Actually I have longer battery life on my iBook running Panther 7b53 than Jaguar 10.2.6... Last night, I got the menu extra display 4 hours 50 mins for the first time in my life!! Indeed, I spent 3 hours and half in Safari, QuickTime and ICQ/iChat and still got 30 mins left (dispalyed on the menu extra).

Damn there's some uppity people in this forum...
Obviously baring in mind that it is a beta, I hope they improve upon memory mangement from 10.2 to 10.3. I thought I read in some thread a while back that one user was getting better better battery life out of whatever version of Panther he/she was using at that time... It'd be nice if this is the case when it's released.

You have a 17" PB. That machine is a desktop replacement, not a laptop... seriously.
You expect awesome battery life out of a machine with a 17" LCD?

will you people give Axo1ot1 a break. He's merely pointing out one of the things that he hopes gets fixed before GM. I too have noticed shorter battery life with 10.3, and yes it is noticeably shorter than with 10.2.6. I didn't mention it in here because of all the crap that Axo1ot1 got.
I hope once Panther comes out everyone will lighten up a little.

fair enough but I have been able to get very respecatble use out of the battery. I recently flew across the US with it and copied my iTunes library onto my iPod and then watched a DVD all on one battery charge. Definitely ran out quicker than my old 550 MHz G4 though.
