Kotoeri comes up, the little box pops up to select hiragana, katakana, or kanji input, and it looks fine when I type it in, but once I press return, everything turns into gibberish. I don"t know what I am doing wrong. Can anyone please help?

I'm on the same train of thought as rjenkinson. Chances are it's an app that doesn't support JP language - they do exist.

You are right - it happens in Eudora. Word is fine. I'm new at posting, so I guess I forgot a lot of important details....

I also tried Powerpoint and Excel, and they don't work either. I am running OSX on an iBook. Which applications do support the Japanese text? It seems as if there are very few.

Entourage seems to work, but will the recipient of the message be able to read the Japanese text?

Thanks to everyone who replied!

Most applications support Japanese text. The only ones that might not are poorly coded Carbon apps, but I haven't run across many. All Cocoa apps work perfectly.

I would assume so. It should send the text encoding along with the mail and the other end can read that an know how to display the text, assuming they have Japanese installed (not an issue for OS X users, but that's the only one I'm sure about). Mail.app sends Japanese just fine. I haven't had an issue with the recipient not being able to read the message I sent, and I didn't have to change anything.

You should have a utilities folder inside your Microsoft Office X folder. In this folder you should have a program called language register. (If you don't you can install it from your office disk). Try dragging the exel and powerpoint applications onto the language register application. The langauge register application will open and you can change the default language from English to Japanese. Then you should have no problems inputting japanese in excel and powerpoint.
