i'm planning on using the forthcoming panther upgrade to completely wipe my hard drive and start fresh.

is there a file i can copy over into the new install in order to preserve all the learning mail.app has done in regards to what is junk mail, or will i have to start training all over again?

i don't really want to copy over all my mailboxes and mail (i'll keep all that stuff in a back-up), just the junk rules.

Great question! I would like to know if this is possible too. Especially with Panther coming up.

GREAT QUESTION!

I plan to do the same - install a new HD internally, and do a 'clean install' - I archived for Jaguar which kept my settings, and it worked great, but I love that 'formatted and fresh installed' feeling - it forces me to clean out the junk.

BUT, I don't want to lose iTunes settings, Mail folders (Junk mail settings), prefs for registered shareware apps etc. I Plan to make a serious backup of my home folder before I do anything - I reccomend the same to you. (I suggest carbon copy cloner).

Help on the easiest way to do a reformat and clean install, and still move over many 'user' based settings, would be greatly appreciated...

Answered my own question - partially...

Check out Back up user prefs seems to do a lot of things I would like prior to a fresh install, though I assume CCC will copy the entire user folder, so you can't go wrong really...

I believe MessageSorting.plist is for user set rules only. I could be wrong. However, why not just copy all of ~/Library/Mail/ and use it with the new installation? I've done this since day 1 and never had any problems. Mail will work just fine, with all your settings.

because i didn't want to bring all my mail from my old install into the new one. i guess i could just copy over the whole folder then delete the mail.

still, i'm curious where the junk mail learning is stored if anyone does know.

I believe the file you are looking for is ~/Library/Mail/LSMMap.
