i am trying to manually edit the DNS hosts file on my Jaguar machine to redirct particular DNS queries to alternate IP addresses....I tried editing the /private/etc/hosts file (as per http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=88158) but that didn't work.

I'd much appreciate any suggestions!

It works on my machine. Have you started Personal Web Sharing (under Sharing Preference Pane)?
