I have no network connection on my B&W G3. I think the cause is the Network Pane which is broken somehow. Here is a picture to illustrate:

None of the tabs you see have anything in them. They are all out of order, and IrDA shouldn't be there at all.. Also, in the pop-up menu, there should be an "Internal Modem" but there isn't, and the "PCI Ethernet Slot..." is something I've never seen.

When booting with verbose mode on, I get the message "configd (daemon) has failed to start." It also mentions that mDNSResponder fails to load and exits with a non-zero status.

Typing "ifconfig" in Terminal reports my only network port is the loopback device. My ethernet port doesn't show up.

Repairing permissions doesn't help. The file system is journaled so fsck shouldn't do anything. Booting in safe mode doesn't help.

I'm running a pretty fresh install of 10.2.6. I just had to reinstall last week and I'm hoping I don't have to do it again.

No luck. I deleted it and restarted. It didn't work or get remade. I tried deleting everything else in that directory and restarted, and it still didn't work and it didn't recreate anything in that directory at all. Isn't it supposed to remake them?

This seems to have started immediately after I installed the Java 1.4.1 update today. How could it be related?

I gave up and reinstalled. It's working now. I wish I knew why that happened.
