My sister-in-law is getting very irritated with her eMac running 10.2.6. She loses her input menu (Japanese language) after every restart, and sometimes it even disappears after launching and using a few apps.

Is this a known bug in 10.2.x or is something else screwed?

I had her repair permissions and delete "com.apple.preferencepanes.cache" and "com.apple.CharPaletteServer.plist." She ran DiskWarrior and finally, reformatted the drive and reinstalled the OS. But none of it has fixed the problem.

Does anyone have a fix for this?

I and my girlfriend sometimes used to get something similar--The font/keyboard sync pref would magically go from unchecked to checked. I say this is similar because it's within the same prefpane. The solution? We don't have one. Sorry. If a complete format/reinstall doesn't fix it then I have no idea.

What is the default language of the installation? (the language chosen first thing during installation)

I have noticed this recently with 10.2.6. The Input Menu just won't be there sometimes, but I can still switch languages with cmd-space. Don't know if it's the same problem or not (it's not really a problem for me since I can still switch to Japanese input, and the menu will appear after switching languages - though only for the app in which I did it).

I haven't experienced this one. It's odd that a reinstall didn't fix it. Does this happen on a fresh installation or do you install anything else (haxies, etc).

Come to think of it, I've heard people on this forum complaining about their Roman (but non-US English) keyboard layout being forgotten in the same fashion as Spliff described. This could be the same issue, and if so, I think someone claimed that it's a known problem. There may be no other solution but to wait for Apple to fix it (or bug them to fix it. Have you reported this to them?)
