hey all,

i recently purchased an external 120gig hard drive, for the purpose of backing up my photos and the simple fact that i want more than the 40 gigs available on my laptop (12" PB). i had the idea to have 2 different itunes librarys...on the external HD, i'll have everything ripped at a much higher bitrate (at least 192), and on my laptop HD i'll keep maybe 10 gigs of stuff that i'll always want to have in 128K aac. so i'll probably end up ripping some things twice, once to the laptop and once to the external HD. i'm basically trying to figure out if i can load what's on my laptop as one music library and load what's on the external HD as another. i found a way to save your library, but not to make a new one...anyone try soemething like this before?

There's an Applescript for iTunes that will allow you to switch libraries. Can't remember the name, but I'm pretty sure I found it on www.macupdate.com . Try a search there?

Not sure if this will help, but I came across it a day or two ago: http://www.malcolmadams.com/itunes/i...haredlib.shtml

By default, when it starts up, iTunes looks for a folder named 'iTunes' in the ~/Music folder.

The easiest (IMHO) way to have two libraries, then, is to have an alias, named 'iTunes', in your Music folder. Just point that alias at different folders, and when you launch iTunes, it will use the library it finds.

To make it easy, have a folder named 'iTunes' on the external disk, and another folder named 'iTunes' somewhere on your Powerbook (other than ~/Music/iTunes).

So to switch libraries, just drag the old iTunes alias to the trash, and option-command drag from the new folder to make a new alias.

As mentioned, I'm sure you could write a little Applescript to do this for you with ease.

Following my own advice, I did a two-minute search on MacUpdate and found this:

http://www.macupdate.com/info.php/id/7689

That does what you are looking for.
