Its only happened to me a two times...no big deal, and hasn't happened since. Just give it a quick restart. Usually when something like this happens (unexplainable) I just run cocktail (maintenance app) on a monthly basis and helps to avoid these kinds of anomalies. Sorry I couldn't give you a more specific reason as to why these things happen...maybe some else can?.

Oh man! Your Mac is DEAD! It's not only dead, but it's releasing toxic colorless, odorless fumes that will slowly kill you. Here's what to do: Immediately wrap the Mac in plastic, sealing it airtight. Then package it up nicely and send it to me. I have the facilities to handle this situation. Email me for my address.
(damn, i'm bored)

Either that or Quartz's text kerning glitched. Honestly, when something like that happens, just freaking restart before posting about it here. I've seen it happen before once too. Apple writes the best code in the business but no code is bulletproof.

Somehow I doubt that anything Cocktail does would have any impact on this sort of problem. Basically all it does is run the built-in maintenance scripts, which just tidy up files and logs as well as update the locate database and backup NetInfo; clear caches and allow you to tweak hidden settings.
I've never used any of these GUI maintenance tools because all of the ones I've seen are just front-ends to things that are run automatically or can be done manually if you really see the need. My personal maintenance routine involves leaving my computer on over night most Friday's as the daily and weekly scripts get automatically run, the monthly script gets a go every so often (when Friday coincides with the end of the month) but it doesn't do that much anyway. The rest of the time they sleep overnight. I'm yet to encounter any major issues.

I'm new to Macs. What is cocktail? What do you normally run to maintain your Mac? I'm familiar with Scandisk and Defrag on a PC, but are there similar items on a Mac?
