wait till the 16th, im fairly certain the release date (or maybe the OS itself ) will be released in Paris. Right now, though, all we have is before the end of the year.

If I remember correctly, they have used Apple Expo Paris to release the public beta...

No politics here. France did the right thing, anyway. I hope they release it when it's done, not before.

Me too. I'm afraid someone will think it needs to ship ASAP and they skip things to get it out the door faster. I'm excited for Panther, but Jaguar is good enough that waiting isn't that bad.

No politics here. <Insert political point here>.

But I do agree with you, Johnny B, on the hope that Panther is released when it's ready. Not before.

no politics here - we need a Mac forum too

Anyways - I don't expect Steve to release Panther in Paris this tuesday. From what I've heard it simply isn't ready yet. What I am expecting is a date. I think Steve will give a presentation of how development is going and give us a release date.

But Bush wont let the UN get in his (our?) way.... will he?

Sorry... got a bit carried away there. Back to the topic at hand. Fingers crossed 10.3 gets released soon (I'm really keen to spend some cash and move our staff from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS 10.3). I hope a date will be anounced in Paris Tuesday.

There is a politics forum in the lounge take it there.

I'll echo what's been said... I'd much rather have 10.3 released when it's finished and Apple has had a chance to refine the OS (window widgets, etc).

I just talked to my dad today, who is in the market for a 12" PowerBook. He was at the Apple Store near St. Louis the other day, and because I'd previously told him about the current PB situation, he grilled the sales guy about it. As usually, the guy kept saying, "Apple keeps us in the dark too -- we don't know anything." My dad told him he wasn't in any hurry to buy one right away anyway, then they talked about Panther a little bit, and then right as my dad was leaving the sales guy handed him his business card and kind of lowered his voice and said, "Check the Web site on Tuesday."

It wasn't totally clear if the guy was referring to PB updates or Panther news, but this is just one more piece of fuel for the fire.

Sometime in October sounds most likely. Isn't that about when 10.2 was released?

My thoughts are that Steve will reveal the ship date of Panther on Tuesday and what better day to release 10.3 than on 10.3.03. Maybe new powerbooks will ship the same day with Panther installed!

As exciting as Panther is, though, I am not looking forward to that new Finder window. I hope there have been some changes to that. Like more ways to control Finder windows appearance system wide. (ie..if the left side window is closed or not)

So, if the release date is October 3rd, I guess that leaves apple off the hook in including panther with my new dual 2 Ghz which is supposed to ship on or before October 2nd.

Funny how things work, ain't it?

Not sure if you remember, but Apple had "pre-release" Jaguar parties at 10:20 the night of the release, hence the whimsical prediction.

Yea, I would say sometime in Oct. I hope anyways... but still, if it needs time to make it better and fix more bugs, than by all means I won't mind the release date to be sometime in Dec. I rather have a OS that is mostly problem free and stable than to have one that is too early and still in beta form.

For what it's worth, it's expected that Panther will go Golden Master this week (says a Systems Engineer friend @ Apple). So Mid-October sounds like a reasonable ship date.

Well, apparently we don't get to find out today. News from the keynote is still "End of the year". The chicken didn't commit to a date!

I've been hoping it is released before the end of October, but all of this "before the end of the year" crap is starting to destroy that hope.

In any case, making sure show stoppers and data destroyers are crushed before release is critical (especially with Filevault). Another fiasco like the iTunes 3 installer would be very bad. And doing the things to complete the experience, like fixing obvious interface problems (as Webscreamer points out every so often), is also critical.

Another quick reaction: I'm also dissapointed that the Panther preview page was not updated, and that Steve did not mention some newer features. I think everyone knows by now that there is much more that what the little PR on the PPP shows us, some of which is arguably just as important or more important than what Apple shows us there.

Ok, all of you who are saying that it will be released on 10/3 know nothing about the sort of timelines involved here. I highly doubt Apple will announce a release date until they have a Gold Master (GM). That's because they don't want to promise everyone something, then listen to all of you whine when they find a bug that causes every single Mac it's installed on to reboot uncontrollably, forcing them to push back the release date. There are obviously issues with Panther right now that Apple doesn't feel comfortable with yet. Those will be fixed before Apple makes any sort of commitment. Also, once a build has been declared GM it will take AT LEAST one month to produce all the CDs, put them in their boxes with manuals, and ship them. So for a 10/3 release we would have had to see Panther go GM in August. At this date, a release in October becomes more and more iffy with every day that passes.

Again, just because Steve said end of the year today doesn't mean that Panther will come out on 12/31. I'm betting on early to mid-November.

Given the wording in the keynote and the status of the builds, I'd say there is no way it is ready for October.

Probably the end of November tops.
