how do i rebuild the desktop in osx?

i am having a issue with my hard drive window icons disapearing
the names are still there, but no "house" "heart" etc...

you don't really.

try running a disk repair or fsck -y and see if that doesn't fix it.

(a more descriptive subject line would be welcome too)

Whenever I have problems with icons etc, I use Cocktail to remove the cache files on the Mac.

Don't know if it's going to fix your problem.

Yeah - there is no 'Rebuild Desktop' in OS X. Since there is no 'Desktop DB' file like there is in OS 9, there is nothing to 'rebuild'. You might have to try another utility like the others have mentioned.
