All of a sudden, applications (Mail.app, Text Edit...) that invoke spell check as I type hang with the message "Couldn't contact Spell Checker". Similarly, attempts to spell check from the edit menu give me a beach ball and that Alert.

So where is this spell checker, how do I restart or re-install it, and what might have happened to it? I'm running 10.2.6 on a 17" iMac, and of course I'll be glad to provide further software details if someone can tell me what might be relevant.
