Hey guys,

I recently installed OS X on a older iBook (blue, and it finished and went through just fine). I got into OS X just fine, and went into Startup Disk and selected to have it boot into OS 9 again. Now, in OS 9, I cannot boot to OS X, its like it does not even see that there is a system folder... I looked on the root of the drive and the mach and mach.sys are there, as is the system folder for os x, but the startup disk utility in OS 9 does not see that there is an OS X. What makes me curious is that the startup disk utility only displays the HD, not even the seperate system folders. So, is his OS 9 to old to boot into X?

Please help, very frustrated here.

Justin

P.S. I have tried holding the X key during boot and it still only goes into 9. Someone PLEASE help.

I am pretty sure it is HFS+, i did not change the format of the drive when i installed OS X, so whatever was there before OS X (in OS 9) i am sure it was either HFS or HFS+. Also, the OS on the system is 9.0.4. Thanks for the response, hopefully we can figure this out.

Well you won't be able to use Classic in X using 9.0.4. You must be using 9.1 at least I believe. As for not being able to see the drive, I'm not sure.

Yea, i know about the not being able to use classic with 9.0.x, anyone know where I can find a cheap OS 9.1 upgrade or something? Do you think I need at least 9.1 in order to even see OS X?

Not if it's formatted in HFS+, which it is.

When you formatted the drive (or partition), did you check the "Install Mac OS 9 Drivers"? Previously, I had OS 9 on one internal drive, and X on the other. But I didn't choose to install the OS 9 drivers on the X drive because I figured I wouldn't have 9 on there, so I'd be OK. But when I would boot into 9, the X drive wouldn't mount. Reformatting and installing the 9 drivers did the trick for me.

Good luck!

The Startup Disk control panel in your OS 9 install isn't new enough to support switching systems when they are on the same drive or partition. There may be an updated version on the OS X install CD (probably in a utilities folder). You can also get it by updating your OS 9 to a newer version. OS 9 updates are free. Either run Software Update or get it from Apple.com. You might also be able to just download a newer startup disk control panel from Apple. Search their downloads page under Apple.com/Support.

Another thing you can try is to boot up holding X. If your hardware is new enough, that will force your system to boot OS X.

Art, you just probably saved my life!! Thank you so much for the info you posted there, just summed it all up and showed me the way. I had no idea the OS 9 updates were on their site, but I should have assumed. THANK YOU SO MUCH
