Here's the problem. I have Windows File Sharing enabled, the correct workgroup named in Directory Access, everything is setup by the book. I can login to my windows machine, but I can't login to my mac from the windows machine. First off, I can't see the mac on the windows machine at all, I have to manually type in the mac's IP (yes, the two machines are on the same subnet). After that, I get the standard Windows XP login screen:
Connecting to 192.168.8.18
User name:
Password:
I type in my username and password, and what I get is the same dialog box again, but this time my username has been replaced by 192.168.8.18\myusername
I can type in my password, retype the username, etc all day long, it will not log me in. I tried creating a different account on my mac, still same problem. Someone out there help me!
thanks
eric smith

As well as enabling "Windows file sharing" in the "Sharing" section of System Preferences, you also need to go into the "Accounts" section of System Preferences and edit the account which you want to access. When you edit it make sure you put a tick in the check box which says "Allow user to log in from windows".

That has been done. Everything was done by the book. I was hoping someone could tell me a login trick.

Do you have the firewall enabled (under the "Firewall" tab in the "Sharing" section of System Preferences)? That may be preventing access.
I have a network connection set up at home between my Mac (running OS X 10.2.6), a PC running Windows XP Pro, and a laptop running Windows 2000 Pro. On both Windows machines I can see the Mac when I bowse the network, so I'm not sure what is causing the difficulty for you.
When logging in you also need to use "Short Name" for the account you want to access rather than the full account name. You can set this in the "Accounts" section of System Preferences.
Good luck!

Enter your username as "computername\username". It looks like XP is trying to do this already, but it does not know the correct computer name so it is using the IP address.

thanks for the tip. I just tried it, still no dice. Is this why I hate windows or why I hate trying to get OS X and Windows to play nicely?

How long is your Windows password?
What is the error returned on XP, if any, just the user name and entry dialog again?
You might want to check the XP event logs for more information as why you can't mount the share.
The syntax is this :
smb://workgroup;username@netbiosname/share
smb://workgroup;buttheads@discomputer/
to display all shares
