Hi All. Apologies for posting here with my OSX Server problem, but I don't think that what's going on is a OSX Server-specific problem (rather it's a more generic OSX problem :-).

I needed to give my installation of OSX Server more space (the OS was sitting on one of two partitions of a single drive, and I wanted to reformat that drive into one partition and run the OS from there).

To do this, I rebooted into OS9 (to avoid any permissions problems). I then copied the partition containing OSX Server on to a another drive, formatted the first drive back in to a single partition, and copied OSX Server back onto the newly formatted drive. I renamed the newly formatted drive with the exact name of the old OSX Server partition.

Now the server doesn't move past the gray apple screen (with the wagon wheel just turning around and around and around...).

What did I screw up, and any ideas on how I can fix it?

Thanks in advance for any help,

Chas

You probably didn't get everything. There are several files that are invisible in both OS 9 and OS X. It is likely you missed them when you did the transfer. Carbon Copy Cloner would have been your best and easiest option. You will probably need to reinstall.

rats, I thought that by working in OS9 I'd catch any OSX specific invisible files during the move.

Thanks for the info, at least I won't keep banging my head against the wall for this.

Not so. There are invisible files in 9 as well. And you missed a lot of files the way you did try.

You need to reinstall then. Sorry, hope you have some good backup.

yeah, well, so much for the quick fix :-)

I wasn't so worried about OS9 invisible files, working the way I did, but I wasn't aware that there were OSX invisible files that were invisible while booted into 9. Live an learn.

As for backups, yeah, I've got the volume both on tape and an external HD, via Retrospect (thus my cavelier attitude and approach to the problem :-)

Thanks for writing,

Chas
