OK,

My dad's eMac has 3 users, and no longer needs one of them.

I have tried deleting this user from the Accounts Prefs, and this user STILL appears on the Login screen.

What does one have to do to totally get rid of a user?

Thanks!

Delete the user from NetInfo Manager. It's in your utility folder. Click the lock, enter your password. Select users in the column browser and hit delete on the user you want removed.

This is an example of what Apple has to do to make OS X all that it should be. The Mac's hallmark is supposed to be that simple intuition is what drives how one interacts with their computer. Fully deleting a user should be done via the preference pane. Instead, we're stuck with NetInfoManager, an app that has no business being needed (or maybe even loaded) on anything other than OS X Server.

Same with permissions. My mother should never, ever, have to think about permissions issues or the need to repair them.

The only time that I have seen that a user account is not fully deleted from the admin window is when there is no user folder to delete.

Then you better downgrade your mother to Mac OS 9. Apple is doing the best they can to make everything seamless, however in a system as advanced and as multi-user as Mac OS X Permissions are a nessecary thing, and somethimes they tend to go awry, or need to be edited for one reason or another. Thats the way it's going to be for a very long time, so you better get used to it.

So you are saying we should "get used to it"....

This is the attitude that lets Microsoft keep selling their crap OS.

We realize Apple is doing a fine job, but since their interface design is one of their best talents, this is an example of a poor interface feature that should be resolved. When I click on a button that says "delete user" it should delete the user! Period!

When I click on "delete user", it does delete the user. Apparently you have run aground of some bug in 10.2.x. Instead of complaining about it, report it to Apple so that they can fix it in 10.2.8, or in 10.3.

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Well, since complaining about it to Apple results in NO feedback, I prefer to complain about it here as well!

Complaining to Apple results in the best feedback of all - a fixed product. Like others have said here, deleting a user works fine for me as well.

Did you have these same users when you were using 10.1, and then upgrade to 10.2? I had the same problem and that was the cause. The solution was to clean install 10.2, then I could delete users easily and quickly.

Well he wasn't actually complaining in the first post...he was asking the question. Of course others decided to start trolling to get a reaction.
