How can I convert friends to OSX if its integrated .mail system is flaky. I'm on the road and have been unable to get my mail for a day and a half now. That's unacceptable for anyone using their Mac for business. I've had this problem intermittently in the past (usually just an hour or so).

[ Sorry, I posted the details in general software forum, but it doesn't get the traffic this one does. Besides, this could be argued to be an overall OS issue, being so integrated into the system functionality ]:

There are similar issues with Safari - it could be the piece de resistance browser if it handled all types of Javascript in ways that major sites (banks, etc) could handle anchors correcty ( http://forums.macnn.com/showthread.p...hreadid=175274 ), etc.

OS X has SO much potential - but it seems to me that "when you're #2 you've got to try harder" -- in fact you can't afford to leave bugs, standards-noncompliance, etc. IS SAFARI UNDER AGGRESSIVE DEVELOPMENT?

Apple - make it easier for me to show friends a flawless interface!

".mail"? I think you mean .Mac

and it's not particularly integrated into the system (or at least the Mail part of it, as opposed to iDisk isn't).

If you don't like Apple's email service, use whatever one came with you ISP, or use your business's or whatever. Mail is certainly capable of using pretty much any email provider's service.

-------

As for Safari, yes it is under VERY aggressive development. It's at version 1.0, and works with the vast majority of sites/javascripts, so settle down. It's not perfect yet certainly, but it's definitely being worked on, and you can always use IE, or whatever other browser you prefer in the meantime.

-------

The reason you didn't get responses in the software forum is probably because of the absurdity of your proposal. Flakiness of .Mac's mail, or minor incompatibilities of Safari, are not reasons to shun OS X.

Well...

First, I haven't had any issues with .Mac outages in the past couple months. So whatever the issue is, it's not global... it's specific to you.

Second... Safari is most certainly under aggressive development. They're revving it pretty quickly in the Panther builds... I'd guess at some point they'll do a drop for Jaguar, too, once they've done sufficient testing.

I don't know any businesses that would use .Mac as their main mail server. Not very smart. Safari just got her training bra a month or so ago, you'll have to give her some time to mature before you complain she's flat chested.

Niether issue has any baring on OS X's 'flawless interface' as far as I can see.

the only mail problems I've had lately have been because of my college network. I run a website so I have e-mail through that, and pretty soon I'll be using an SSH tunnel to fix my last remaining problems over this college network. After that me and OS X will continue to get along swimmingly.

You should probably suggest your friends get a mac with OS X but not .mac

And whoever made the claim that the Mac OS's has a "flawless interface"? There's no such thing as flawless when it comes to software, ESPECIALLY an OS. Your expectations are high, and maybe that's a good thing, but not recommending the Mac to someone because you deem it not worthy is a crime.

Well I don't know where you are located while traveling, but some major Internet backbones were hammered fairly hard because of the hurricane and loss of power.

I haven't had any .mac issues the past several days. And I have seen .mac unavailable, but so has my commercial email account been at times.
Sorry for your troubles.

I, too, have seen .Mac unavailable in the past, but it's definitely been up continuously for the last several months. Check other stuff before assuming it's the problem... and also, there's no such thing as ".mail". ".Mac" is Apple's collection of ISP-like services which includes an email account; "Mail" is their email client. There is some degree of integration, but no necessity whatsoever to use one with the other if using OS X. You can use Mail with other email accounts, .Mac with other email clients, or different accounts with different clients. So it's hardly a reason to shy from recommending the OS!
