This 533MHz Powermac G4 seems to have a mind of its own. It will randomly log itself in. After the user leaves in the evening, she makes sure to log out so that the backup software will run, and some days when she comes back in the next morning the computer is magically logged in.

I thought it might have been someone knowing her password and using it w/o telling her, so we changed that. I confirmed in every which way that automatic login isn't select under System Preferences, and now just think that the Mac has a mind of its own.

Has anyone else experienced an issue similar to this?

I think what you describe is impossible, unless

A) she didn't logout but slept the machine ( or logout failed and she didn't notice)

B) she has no password , but you changed that.

So try a controlled logout with her and see if she is actually loging out ( maybe she starts a logout and sleeps by closing the clamshell).

or maybe she forgot to actually logout on the days that she said she did.

Try running last in the Terminal to see when these mystery logins are occurring.

Oh, and incidentally: Most PowerMacs don't have clamshells....
