New system config problems crop up in the weirdest places.

I just started up the Classic Environment on my new G5 box... and the factory-installed OS 9 browsers aren't finding the net. There *is* no Classic network control panel... presumably it would be using the network settings I have in OS X... but it's failing. My net configuration in X is working like a charm, though. (as demonstrated by this message to y'all...).

Netscape 4 tells me it's unable to create a network socket connection. IE 5 just tells me that accessing the URL failed.

Why, you may ask, do I care? I'm a web developer... and doing browser testing is kinda the responsible thing to do.

So this bites. And I was so pleased at how fast Classic starts up on a Dual G5...
(sigh)

Just a guess, but try putting the TCP/IP preferences from a good Classic system into your Classic System's folder.

I'd love to... but this a brand new system... and all my legacy systems would have different TCP/IP settings, no?

Suggestion 1: Test locally

Suggestion 2: Snag the whole system folder from a machine that runs classic properly and stick it on the G5

If I were doing static sites that would be a hell of a lot easier. In my case it means replicating databases, Perl & Apache mods, etc. from my Linux server.

Its worth a try. What have I got to lose. Still, it bugs me that this is a from-the-factory installation of OS X and Classic, and it's got this problem.

EDIT: Well, that didn't work. I copied the System Folder from my TiBook, and Classic started from that new folder just fine... and has exactly the same problem.
