Hi Everybody,

I have a Powermac G4 server at work running OSX 10.2 server.
Here is my problem:
My Hard Drive has a capacity of 30 GB.
I started getting errors that the hard disk is full.
I did "GET INFO" and noticed that the full 30 gigs were
all used up. I had to erase some data to get rid of the
"HARD DRIVE IS FULL" error.
Now I don't have 30GB of stuff on my hard drive.
Just the OS, some MSword files, and filemaker pro.

I almost feel like my hard drive space is disappearing!
I am using the most updated version of 10.2 server..
I believe it's 10.2.6
Can anybody help me? Why is my Disk Space all used up?
Why is it disappearing?

Thanks,
Anthony

Well, you didnt really tell us your full problem, or why your hard drive space is disappearing. If it is a server, I don't know why you would delete all of its files. It's a server, its probably other peoples important data you got rid of.
If what you mean is that you deleted everything, but the 30 gigs is still taken up, check and see if Norton is installed. Norton FileSaver saves all of your deleted files, so you can safely "undelete" files.

I don't think you really understand my problem, but thanks anyway.

I didn't erase other people's important data to make more space. That is not the point- the point is my 30GB hard drive is all used up and my files and all the users files don't add up to 30gb.

I was wondering what happened to all my space? I should have 20GBs left.

Try running speed disk and/or disk doctor/diskwarrior. The drives directory could be damaged, thus confusing the disk about how much space is left, or the drive coule be very fragmented, which is what norton speed disk is for. Repair the disk first, then run speed disk with the "wipe all free space" option on.

wow thanks. I'll try that. I don't own a copy of either, but they are compatible with OSX Server?

I'll give it a try, thanks.

What about system files, log files, crash logs, etc.

The disk contains way more data than just user files. The problem is somewhat compounded by the fact that the Finder hides most of the system directories from view, so this means adding up the size of all the files you see in the Finder is a total waste of time.

Open a terminal window and run:

sudo du -ks /

This will give you a true indication of the disk space used by the various top-level directories. Once you find which one is consuming all your space, you can rerun the command to dril down to find the culprit.

Thanks for everybody's help.

I actually used DISKWARRIOR version 3.0 and it fixed everything. I completely recommend this product for anybody having harddrive problems.
