Nice. But I still think its a shame they are "complicating" an allready perfectly pure and instantly recognizable form - one of the best logos out there.
I wonder if this could have something to do with the ridiculous Apple Corp. lawsuit against Apple Computer - perhaps Apple are quietly taking steps to differentiate their logo from that of a more generic "apple image"? The suit challenges Apples use of the Apple logo in relation to theit "music business practices" - iTunes, so changing the logo may perhaps strengthen Apples defense. Or perhaps its simply a corporate profile update/makeover.

Dunno... the former blue ones had a "textured" look to them. I'm glad they did something... the Panther logos were just plain flat and grey... kinda ugly.

I really like it. Its a lot better that the previous grey Apple logo used in previous Panther builds and its nice to have something newer than just the Aqua logo.

They've also finally changed the font to the newer style... no more Apple Garamond. I like the apple logo better than the "Aqua X" too.
I just can't wait to get my mitts on the dang retail package already. There are so-many features I could use TODAY...!

Can you take some pictures of what the new font changes looks like now compared to the old?

Ummm... Scroll-up... THAT is the new font in the image... THEN... go to "About this Mac" from your Finder's "Apple" menu and you'll see the 'current' iteration. I do not have Panther.
Just pointing-out what was in the screenshot above.

Also... WOW! Dunno if it's been there in other builds... can't say I was paying attention... but "Software Update" in the 'About this Mac' box is really nifty.
They're starting to hit some of thesmaller details now with the OS.
I think by Mac OS 10.6 or 10.7... this will be truly a sleek, powerful & refined OS (not that it isn't already great)

I like the new Apple it really brings life back to that window along with the boot panel where the gray logo just kind of faded away.

Has anyone else noticed how poorly kerned the text is for the Myriad font as opposed to Garamond? If they'll just tighten up the spacing somewhat, I can deal with it.
Because if they don't, I'm not upgrading!
(Also, I knew a new build would come out now - obviously, since I *just* got around to burning 7B68 to look at it...)

The real question is (new about screen logos notwithstanding): are there significant differences between this and 7B68. That is, have they further refined the Finder to remove all of the little UI bugs. Also, is QT 6.4 final in this build?

Is this new to Panther? I looked on my system and didn't find it - did I delete it somewhere down the line?

You are always a build behind because the people who are supposed to have Panther take time to put it up on your pirate channels.

Hell NO! Panther pre-releases are just way to cool. It's great being able to watch as things begin to work as new builds come out.

I love to read about the firsthand accounts from TS and you people here that have acquired 10.3 from dubious sources. Personally, I don't mind where people get the betas from, as I like reading about what's new.
I doubt there will be anything else that we haven't heard of already and I am ready to pony up the $ for Panther.
X just keeps getting better. 10.2 was *so* much better than 10.1, so for me the bar is kind of high. I'll be expecting something on the order of that level of improvement.

Has anyone heard anything regarding 10.3's release? Last I heard was late October, does this seem to be holding? Also, I'm upgrading a buddies G4 400 yikes machine. (Already overclocked it to 450, god I miss jumpers!) but I need to replace the stock CD-ROM with a DVD-ROM/CD-R combo drive. Currently unless you are willing to go with 8x burns you need to hack the drivers in X.2.6 to use faster drives. (Thank you xlr8yourmac!) Granted with the hacks the 40x+ drives work well, but Panther uses a different system for drivers. Anyone know of a DVD-Rom/CD-R/W combo drive that will work in 10.3?

Where did you hear that October crap? Apple said by the end of the year and that is what they are still saying. Until you hear an official date from Apple ignore all these "It is good for daily use, the GM is right around the corner".

That's true, but it's logical to assume that if no new features have been implemented, that no major bugs have needed fixing, and that apart from a few cosmetic tweaks it is essentially the same as previous builds, GM isn't far away...
Indeed, Think Secret claims a source suggests it will be released to manufacturing within the next 3 weeks.
A lot of us believe Apple is still officially saying "by the end of the year" without formally announcing it simply to avoid a large amount of free upgrades to current purchasers of G5s and PB G4s.
(And they should be entitled to the revenue - Panther sounds like it's shaping up to be worth every penny, and someone should pay for it - for one thing, they need to subsidise all the pirates around here.)
Besides, Apple knows that many people will use Panther's release to trigger a hardware purchase, which suits them fine as it will pick up the inevitable slack in hardware sales after their initial surge.

For what it's worth, the font in that sceen capture of the OS X About box was Lucida Bold. Apple does use Myriad in print now though, and also in the About boxes for iTunes, iPhoto, etc.

I picked up the "Late October" date awhile back. I know, never base anything on internet rumors, but back in June, late Oct. seemed reasonable... I prefer longer/less bugs vs. the shorter/bugapalooza when it comes to development time.
I guess it's done when it's done. Usually Apple pre-sells OS releases though. Looking forward to locking in my copy.
More of a concern, DVD-ROM/CD-RW drives that (will) work in 10.3. Any suggestions? For that matter any suggestions for the same thing in 10.2, as it will 99% be a working drive in 10.3 as well... Maybe I should ask in the perph forum.

Personally... I'd rather wait for the "Prime-Time" build to install and get the effect. I think if I were to get/use/install Panther now... then it wouldn't be a fraction as exciting to install the retail version when it comes out.
All the little features and speed improvements wouldn't seem as cool if I had been using them all-along yet on an unsable or beta buils where I 'could' have problems or crippled functionality.
I'd much rather have the "Release" version for my "virgin" Panther experience. But, hey... that's just me.

The people on here that pirate it, and fiend for every new build then talk endlessly about it, and cream themselves over build numbers, are the ones that will buy Panther.

You may be right. I suppose it really depends on the morals of the person.
But don't the same places that provide these pirated builds also allow downloading the final release?
And don't these same places become INCREDIBLY busy around the time it is released?
Curious...
