Hi all. First timer here. Have owned many macs over the years, last one was a Quicksilver 733. Sold it about a year ago, and gonna buy a new G5 for xmas when the dust settles a bit.

I was interested to hear some tidbits that Apple had hired a few BeOS engineers some time back to integrate a BeOS-like fully journaled file system into OS X. I understand that Panther will have it, but I dont know muvh else? Can anyone confirm this and do you have any details on it. The BeOS file system at the time was a work of art as anyone who used ( or in my case, is using ) that OS will attest. It is great fun to jerk the AC plug out of the wall simulating a power outage while doing a lot of file stuff and have nothing happen as a result.

If what I read was true Apple needs to trumpet this fact more than they have. A Rieser-like or updated BeOS file system would really help with servers and databases.

Can anyone add anything to this?

It's just a journalled version of HFS+, which is available in 10.2 but not enabled by default.

Question about journaled file systems: if we make a drive journaled and then were to mount that drive under OS 9 (external drive)... what would happen?

Does it screw up the fs?

It won't screw up the file system using it from OS9 but it won't journal transactions. If you crash in 9 while doing something on the disk you're going to have to sit through fsck when X starts up. The journalling on HFS+ simply added the functionality to the file system while keeping it backwards compatible with non-journaling FS drivers like the ones in 10.1 and OS9.

actually, i've been wondering what had become of those BFS guys. all we got was a (hackish?) journaling implementation that's running above the FS.

I'm not expecting a new format right away though. it takes time to design a proper FS, especially a BFS/Reiser type.....Apple's "rest of us" type (grandma) customers don't appreciate incompatibility and technical stuff like this, so Apple has to make sure that this new format can be kept for a while. still, i'm wondering what's cooking....
