My real question is about icons. Lets say I find a new icon that I would like for all of my new folders from here on out to look like.
I know how to individually change the icon image by going into 'get info' copy, paste etc etc. So I got that part. My question is how do I make this universal so I don't have to manually change these things one by one.

I guess there is no way to change the default images for icons.

Your asking in the wrong forum, which may be why no answers. Go to the Gui Customization forum.
To change some icons, i.e., folders.
Select the icon you want,
open the get info window,
click on the icon and copy it.
do a getinfo on the destination
click on that icon and then paste.
Candycane can also change icons I beleieve it can be downloaded at iconfactory.com and to change cursors you can download a untility (the name escapes me today) from unsanity.com. For everything else hit gui forum here.

ok didnt even notice the other forum. but now that were are talking about it here, i already know how to change the icons one by one or individually, read my first post.
i was wondering if there is some sort of setting that i can enable that will allow all new folders to default to the new icon.
i heard about the candybar app, but i dont want to pay for it. i figured there must be something is this fantastic OS that would allow those customizable changes to take place.

Well, you can use CandyBar for awhile, during its demo period I used it to change my system over to a nice set of icons, haven't changed 'em since and feel kinda guilty about it.
The app replaces some system icon resource somewhere, but I don't know which. It's probably been discussed over at the UI forum and they most likely know. It can be done by hand, without an app.
A great resource for modifying your Mac is http://www.resexcellence.com/ , you could search there, too.
Good luck,
J
