So, I'm trying to allow my ex-gf to connect to her father's office network. As far as I can tell, he is running w2k Pro (or maybe NT!) on a server with 3 workstations (2 running w2k and one running win98). I somehow managed to install some kind of a client for Macintosh on the server and I restarted it. This now allows me to connect to the server as follows:

afp:/at./SERVER:*

(keep in mind I don't know what the above mean b/c it just connected to it automatically when I hit cmd+k)

The problem is that when I connect I now get a little file with a "read me" that says I need to install this UAM in my system folder. Having read the rest of it, it seems that this was designed to allow me to connect via OS 9.2.

However, I don't want to use 9, I want to use 10. Should I be using SMB instead of AFP? If so, do I need to install anything else on the server, or configure the TCP/IP on my Mac in any particular way? fwiw, I want to access the F: drive on the server which seems to already be set up as a share. However, I all I get when I connect right now is that stupid UAM file. Thanks all.

Sounds like you need to be using smb:// yes....you won't need any other software or configuration set-up on the Mac side in order to see the share....

I thought so. But when I type:

smb://SERVER/

I get the -50 error. Do I have to type...

smb://at./SERVER:*

smb://username@servername

or smb://username@IPaddress
I would use AFP not SMB if you have SFM, Services for Macintosh installed. Seems you are mounting a share with nothing in it, but the UAM folder.
See this
link on UAM

Try just connecting to the server with its IP address, and see what list of shares are available. If AFP is available, it will use that.
