Why are there so many installers?

I've been using OSX since the PB days so I'm not sure why this is bothering me now. But why are there like 10 different installers for OSX?
Personally I don't understand why we need installers at all. None of the installers offer any wonderful functionality such as an uninstall. So why not just go with the "Drag this folder to your hard drive". At least at that point the user know that to delete it all they need to do is "Drag the folder to the trash".
So can I please appeal to the developers out to just give us disk image or CD and let us just copy one folder. I'm mean even Microsoft has figured this one out.

I wouldn't say that. Last time I installed Internet Explorer it used an installer package. Funny thing was, when I looked at the install log afterwards it may as well have been a drag&drop installation. All the files it installed were inside the application bundle!

Some packages have legitimate reasons to exist - A lot of Apple stuff needs to be able to update files in /System, for example. Also, some apps like WireTap need to install kernel extensions.
However, some packages, such as IE, are stupid. Fortunately, I have a solution for this.

What bothers me are Microsoft's installers that insist that all other applications be closed before install can take place. This seems to include background processes. For apps that don't require drivers or kexts, this seems ridiculous.

The .pkg system does not include any dependency checking. An uninstall feature would be extremely dangerous.
