I recently recieved a G5 (Running 10.2.7), and am having a bit of display trouble.

I have a monitor that likes 1600x1200 only at 60hz. anything else goes all wobbly like. I ran it like this for years on my PC, but on the G5 in display preferences, my only option is 70hz. 60, 67, 72 and 75 are in the list, but are greyed out.

I have two windowserver plist files, one in the system library preferences directory and one in my own home directory. I open them up in text edit and find the refresh rate tag, and there is a number that appears to be (refresh rate)(16)(16)(16)(16). Taking the number there in a 60hz mode (I can set it to 60hz for 1024x768), and replacing the 70hz refreshrate tag, I can save the files, but upon reboot it is still at the 70hz refresh rate.

Simply: Does anyone know how to force the window server to read the plist file located on the disk, or know of an alternative method of setting the refresh rate manually?

I have tried this script, but it still seems to be locked into the 'available' refresh rates: http://macosxlabs.org/tools_and_scri...etDisplay.html

DEAR LORD! CharlesV... please explain to me how to use that program to me at macosxlabs ... it looks like what I have been looking for all my life! (well over the past 2 days). I am the one trying to get a custom resolution on my cube to run a HDTV.

Also.. You should check out a program called switchres. People use that a lot to get the most out of display set ups. It sounds like what you need.

Oh MAN, thanks for that link, it worked WONDERS.

Here's the SetDisplay utility, compiled:
http://hub.crazylife.org/SetDisplay.dmg

Run it via Terminal as ./main Xres Yres BitDepth RefreshRate

Right now if you just run main, the default values are 1600 1200 32 60, which didnt work fo rme. But That app did ! Now, to register....

move the file 'main' to a directory somewhere (say, your desktop)
open up the terminal and go type "cd ~/Desktop"

then type "./main 1024 768 32 60" or whatever you need to change to.

SHOULD work.
