The article is mostly about the Apple logo, but they have a bit about the Panther release, and say that it is "expected to be released to the public in the next few weeks". Not sure I believe it though - seems too early.

I hope not... I have .Mac to renew (I actually use it quite a bit) in October, a trip to Florida in early November and a trip to Washington state at the end of November. I won't have any money for Panther!

Well there are just a few weeks before the end of the year so I guess they are right.

Yea, I would say earliest mid to late Oct. But I'm more of aiming towards the end of Nov. to early Dec. Dates.

I hope it comes out soon, I want to format my drive.

This may sound strange but I format my drive and do a combo install at most point releases.

Computer came with 10.2.1
formatted, installed 10.2.3
formatted, installed 10.2.6

everything worked for me in 10.2.3 and I think it was the best release but iTunes 4 pressured me in to 10.2.6.

Well I hope they are right and it's that soon.
Right now I'm having a hard time finding a reason not to make 7B74 my full time OS.

I hope they wait and iron out the bugs and add some more cool things.

The builds have seen some pretty dramatic changes, I expect more before final.

Yeah, that does sound strange. Why? Seems like a waste of time.

Yes, it sounds odd and strange. There is no need for formatting drives unless you want another partition scheme.

I do it not because I partition my drive but because I just want a clean install. I screw around and try a bunch of themes, and icons and install a lot of webserver apps like different databases and languages. I just like to have fun with the os and all of my documents and music are on a different drive so it is easier to wipe and install than it is too fix I think.

I usually do a format-install with each new major release--10, 10.1, 10.2, etc.--but even that's getting old.

Linfidels harken! 'The creatures outside looked from pig to man, and from man to pig, and from pig to man again; but already it was impossible to say which was which.'

This looks bogus:

The point of this screengrab as posted by www.chaosmint.com was how it no longer says "Pre-release". But like I said, it doesn't seem right. ("Duale" and "1 MB L3 cache per processor")

You could just Archive & Install...

Ticking sound coming from a .pkg package? Don't let the .bom go off! Inspect it first with Pacifist. Macworld - five mice!

Format and install seems fairly extreme. I've upgraded from 10.1 to 10.26 without a single major system issue...

You are not alone. I do about the same thing. When I feel like things need a bit of a clean-up, after things like themes as you say, and then a new point release arrives, I often reformat, just because it's so easy really. I keep things in a folder that I want to back-up first so it's no real hassle, and it only takes about half an hour to get back to about the same point anyway. Of course, this is not something that one would do if running Windows!

Anyway, using this strategy I have never had any of the problems that others have reported with the various point updates, so I don't knock it .

It is possible that the "Duale" is due to the system running in a different language. Google translated Duale to Dual in a French to English conversion.

"duale" doesn't exist in french . On french systems it probably says "double" or "bi-processeur".

Except that the rest is in English, and dual Power Macs have 2 MB L3 per processor.
