I know OS X can read/write/create "MS-DOS Filesystems" but I think that's FAT-16.

I don't know how well OS X supports FAT-32.

Note that NTFS support is read only. This is true with the built in drivers in Panther as well.

Yes. How's it connected, USB or Firewire? Just plug it in, it will show up in the finder. No problems whatsoever.

No it's FAT16 or FAT32. FAT16 is so old it's ridiculous.

MS-DOS option is FAT32. FAT32 will read and write in OSX without issue. Best to follow Windows file naming rules and leave alone any invisible files each OS will write that the other will display.

FAT hard drives with more than 128GB are NOT supported in Jaguar. The Jaguar FAT driver has been virtually unchanged since 1996. Panther, however, comes with a new FAT driver and I guess that this problem will be fixed then.

I have an external firewire hd that had been formatted ntfs (in a Compusa case) for use with a Vaio laptop which I traded away a month ago. I figured I'd wait for Panther to format it for use with my Mac. A few days ago on a whim I tried getting it to mount in OS X 2.8. When connected directly to the firewire port it wouldn't mount. However, when connected through a bridge cable connected to my external combo drive ( new ADS case) the ntfs hd showed on the OS X desktop as read only! I then booted into OS 9 and the drive showed up as unreadable. I was then able to format it as a Mac hd. This is all kinda strange but I do have my external drive back for use on the Mac.
