This is very strange behavior on 10.2.6, 17" G4 PowerBook.
When I empty the trash the Finder redraws and any open windows in the Finder are closed. I've tried this only from the Finder and from within an open app like Word. With Word being the active app, when I empty the trash you can see Finder windows in the background closing. Has anyone seen this behavior? Where might I start to look for a problem/solution?
I had 10.2.6 installed and running fine and had a brain fade and ran the 10.2.6 updater again doh! (thinking it was something else). Anyways after the 2nd 10.2.6 update this behavior appeared. It may have also coincided with some changes I made using CandyBar 1.5.4 (coincidence?). I've since removed all of the CandyBar changes but the redrawing/closing window "feature" still remains when I empty trash.
Thanks,
Todd

The finder is crashing when you empty the trash. Thats why it redraws everything when it relaunches. try deleting the finder preferences and repairing permissions then reboot.

Thanks for the tip. Tried that and the Finder still behaves the same.
Here's what I did:
1) reboot in single user mode
2) /sbin/fsck -y
3) /sbin/mount -uw /
4) cd /Users/<myname>/Library/Preferences
5) rm com.apple.finder.plist
6) systemStarter
7) diskutil repairPermissions /
8) reboot
Even after all of this the Finder still redraws and closes windows on Empty Trash. How bad is this crash I wonder? If not too serious then I could see if the next 10.2.? release fixes it by replacing some files. Then again if I could fix it now that would be good too.
Thanks,
Todd

Try logging in as a new user. If that resolves the issue then you know it is something in your user account. (probably the library folder)

I ended up reinstalling the OS (and patches) and all is well now. I installed and saved my User settings so it may not have been with my Library folder but rather something else. I will keep the 2nd user login in mind if this happens again.
Thanks,
Todd
